What Is CNC Milling?

Precision Parts, Made by Computer-Controlled Cutting

CNC milling is a subtractive manufacturing process. It starts with a solid block of metal or plastic. A rotating cutting tool then removes material to shape your part — all guided by computer code from your 3D CAD file.

Think of it as a very precise, automated sculpting machine. It can drill holes, cut pockets, carve complex curves, and create flat surfaces — all in one setup. This makes it ideal for parts that need tight tolerances and repeatable quality.

As a leading China CNC milling manufacturer and supplier, YiguProto delivers this precision directly from our Dongguan factory to customers worldwide. No brokers, no delays, no surprises.

  • Works with almost any metal or hard plastic
  • Holds tight tolerances for functional parts
  • Great for prototypes and production runs alike
  • No expensive tooling required — start quickly

Our Capabilities

3-Axis, 4-Axis, and 5-Axis CNC Milling

We match the right machine to your part — no overkill, no shortcuts.

Most Popular

3-Axis Milling

The workhorse of CNC machining. The cutting tool moves along X, Y, and Z axes — perfect for flat parts, simple geometries, holes, and pockets. Fast, cost-effective, and ideal for most prototype and production parts.

Best for: Brackets, plates, housings, jigs, fixtures, simple enclosures

Flat surfacesPocketsDrilled holes2D profiles
Complex Parts

4-Axis Milling

Adds a rotating axis (A-axis) so the workpiece can be turned while being cut. This lets us machine multiple sides of a part in one setup — reducing errors and lead time on parts that need features on several faces.

Best for: Gears, cams, shafts with side features, cylinders, extruded profiles

Multi-side featuresAngled holesCylindrical camsContoured surfaces
Highest Precision

5-Axis Milling

The cutting tool moves across five axes simultaneously. We can reach any angle on a part in a single setup — making truly complex shapes, undercuts, and deep cavities possible with the highest accuracy.

Best for: Aerospace parts, medical implants, turbine blades, complex molds, impellers

Complex 3D shapesUndercutsDeep cavitiesContoured surfaces

💡 Not sure which axis count you need?

You do not have to decide. Send us your CAD file and our engineers will recommend the most efficient machining approach. We will never push 5-axis pricing on a part that can be done perfectly on a 3-axis machine.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to the questions we get most often.

CNC milling is a computer-controlled machining process where a rotating cutting tool removes material from a solid block (called a "blank" or "workpiece") to create a finished part. The machine follows precise instructions from a CAM program generated from your 3D CAD file. It can move the cutting tool along multiple axes to create flat surfaces, holes, pockets, slots, threads, and complex 3D contours — all with very high precision.
Most of our CNC milling quotes are returned within 6-12 business hours, and all quotes are guaranteed within 24 hours. To get the fastest and most accurate quote, send us your 3D CAD files (STEP/STP preferred) along with any 2D drawings that specify tolerances, material, finish, and quantity.
Our standard tolerance for CNC milled metal parts is ±0.005 mm (±0.0002 inch), following ISO 2768 medium standards. For plastic parts, standard tolerance is ±0.01 mm. We can hold tighter tolerances down to ±0.002 mm when specified on your drawing with GD&T callouts. If you have specific tolerance requirements, note them on your drawing and we will confirm feasibility during our DFM review.
We accept STEP (.stp, .step), IGES (.igs, .iges), SolidWorks native files (.sldprt, .sldasm), Parasolid (.x_t, .x_b), and STL files (for reference). For accurate tolerancing, please also provide 2D PDF drawings with critical dimensions, tolerance callouts, material specs, surface finish requirements, and any GD&T notes.
We mill over 50 different materials. Common metals include aluminum (6061, 7075, 5052), stainless steel (304, 316, 17-4 PH), carbon steel (1018, 1045, 4140), brass, copper, titanium (Grade 5), and nickel alloys. Common plastics include ABS, POM (Delrin), PC (polycarbonate), PMMA (acrylic), PA (nylon), PEEK, PTFE, and polypropylene. If you need a specific material not listed, ask us — we can likely source it.
There is no strict MOQ for our CNC milling service. We regularly produce single one-off parts for prototyping, small bridge runs of 10-500 pieces, and full production volumes of 10,000+ parts per month. Whether you need one part or ten thousand, you will receive the same level of quality and attention.
Our standard lead time is 3-8 business days, depending on part complexity, material availability, quantity, and surface finish requirements. Rush service with delivery in 1-3 business days is available for urgent projects. Lead time starts after you approve the quote and make payment. We will always give you a specific delivery date with your quote.
Yes. Every quote includes a free DFM review by our experienced engineers. We check for features that could cause problems during milling — such as deep narrow pockets, overly thin walls, impossible internal corners, or tolerance stacks — and suggest practical changes to reduce cost, improve quality, or shorten lead time. This review happens before you commit to anything.
Quality is built into every step. We perform first article inspection (FAI) on all new parts, in-process dimensional checks during production, and final inspection using calibrated measuring equipment including calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and CMM (coordinate measuring machine). Material certificates (mill test reports) are available, and we can provide full inspection reports with your shipment upon request. Our factory is ISO 9001:2015 certified.
Absolutely. We treat all customer files, drawings, and project information as strictly confidential. All files are stored in our secure system with limited access. We are happy to sign a mutual NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) before you share any sensitive designs. We never use customer parts for marketing purposes without explicit permission.
We offer a comprehensive range of surface finishes including: as-machined (standard), bead blasting, anodizing (Type II and Type III hard coat in various colors), powder coating, wet painting, brushing, polishing, electropolishing, passivation (for stainless steel), black oxide, electroplating (nickel, chrome, zinc), alodine/chromate conversion, tumble finishing, and heat treatment. Let us know your requirements and we will recommend the right finish.
We can produce prototype samples for your evaluation and testing before you commit to a full production order. Sample costs depend on the material, complexity, and quantity — but this cost is typically credited back to you when you place a subsequent production order. Contact us to discuss your sample needs.
We ship worldwide using trusted carriers including DHL, FedEx, UPS, and TNT for small to medium orders (typically 3-5 days door-to-door). For larger orders we also offer air freight and sea freight options to help reduce shipping costs. All shipments include tracking numbers, and we carefully pack parts to prevent damage in transit. We can ship DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) to most countries.
