What is DLP?

DLP 3D Printing, in plain English

DLP stands for Digital Light Processing. It is a resin-based 3D printing technology that builds parts layer by layer using UV light. If you are new to it, here is what you need to know.

Think of DLP like a very precise, upside-down projector shining into a tray of liquid plastic. Instead of tracing each shape with a laser (that is SLA), DLP flashes an image of a whole layer at once. The liquid resin hit by the light hardens into solid plastic. The build plate lifts a tiny bit, the next image flashes, and the part grows one thin slice at a time.

Because every pixel on the screen cures at the same time, DLP is fast — especially on batches of small parts. And because the pixels are tiny (often around 50 microns or smaller), DLP produces incredibly sharp detail and smooth surfaces right out of the printer. That is why designers pick DLP for jewelry, dental parts, electronics housings, micro-fluidics and anything with tiny features.

When to choose DLP

  • You need very fine details (engravings, textures, small features under 0.5 mm)
  • You want smooth surfaces with minimal visible layer lines
  • You are printing small-to-medium parts in prototype or low volumes
  • You need a fast turnaround — 2 to 5 days, not weeks
  • You need material options: standard, tough, flexible, clear, high-temp, castable
  • You want master patterns for urethane casting or jewelry investment casting

Not sure if DLP is the right process for your part? Send us your file — our engineers will recommend the best option, for free.

Why DLP at YiguProto

Six reasons engineers choose our DLP service

We run industrial DLP machines in our own factory in Dongguan, China — not a broker, not a trading desk.

1

Sharp, fine detail

Layer heights from 25 to 100 microns and pixel resolution down to ~50 µm catch tiny engravings, thin walls, textures and snap-fit features that FDM printers miss.

2

Smooth surfaces out of the machine

DLP parts print with a smooth, almost injection-molded look. Less sanding and finishing work means faster turnaround and lower cost for painted or clear parts.

3

Fast — even in batches

Because a whole layer cures at once, printing 1 part or 20 parts on the same build plate takes roughly the same time. Rush orders can ship in 24–48 hours.

4

Wide material choice

Standard, tough (ABS-like), flexible, high-temperature, clear/transparent, castable wax, dental and biocompatible resins — all in one shop.

5

Tight tolerances

We hold ±0.05 mm on well-designed parts (±0.1 mm on larger features). Calibrated machines, climate-controlled print room, and trained technicians.

6

Factory-direct price

No middlemen, no agency markup. You work directly with the China factory that prints your parts. Same quality as US/EU bureaus — typically 30–60% less.

Materials

Pick the right resin for your job

We stock a full range of industrial DLP resins. Not sure which one to pick? Tell us how the part will be used and we will recommend the best fit.

Standard Resin

Our most affordable general-purpose resin. Good detail, smooth surface, easy to paint. Best for look-and-feel prototypes, display models and early design checks.

Prototypes · Display models
Tough / ABS-like Resin

Higher impact strength and a little flex. Handles snap-fits, clips and functional tests without snapping. The workhorse for engineering prototypes.

Functional parts · Snap fits
Rigid / High-Stiffness Resin

Very stiff, low creep, good for jigs, fixtures and housings that must hold shape under load. Feels close to filled engineering plastic.

Jigs & fixtures · Housings
Flexible / Elastomeric Resin

Rubber-like feel, from soft Shore A 60 to semi-rigid Shore A 90. Great for gaskets, seals, grips, overmold prototypes and wearables.

Gaskets · Grips · Wearables
High-Temperature Resin

Heat deflection temperature up to ~230 °C (post-cured). Used for molds, tooling, hot-air housings, wind-tunnel test parts and under-hood prototypes.

Tooling · Hot-air parts
Clear / Transparent Resin

Prints slightly frosted; polishes to near-glass clarity. Ideal for lenses, light pipes, fluidic devices, bottles, see-through housings and art pieces.

Lenses · Light guides · Flow
Castable Wax Resin

Burns out cleanly with zero ash for investment casting. Used by jewelers and dental labs for rings, pendants, crowns and bridges.

Jewelry · Dental casting
Biocompatible / Dental Resin

ISO 10993 certified resins for surgical guides, dental models, aligner models and hearing-aid shells. Printed and post-cured under controlled conditions.

Medical · Dental
ESD / Flame-Retardant Resin

Specialty resins for electronics work: static-dissipative resins for trays and fixtures, and UL94 V-0 flame-retardant grades for electrical housings.

Electronics · ESD · UL94

FAQ

DLP 3D Printing — frequently asked questions

Straight answers to the questions buyers ask us most. Do not see yours? Contact our team — we reply fast.

DLP (Digital Light Processing) is a resin 3D printing method. A digital projector shines UV light onto a tray of liquid plastic resin. Wherever the light hits, the resin turns solid. The printer builds your part one thin layer at a time, from the bottom up. It is known for very fine detail, smooth surfaces, and fast printing.
On well-designed parts, our DLP service holds tolerances down to ±0.05 mm for small features, and ±0.1% (with a ±0.1 mm floor) for general dimensions. Layer heights range from 25 to 100 microns. If you have tight tolerance requirements, tell us up front and our engineers will confirm what is achievable.
Standard lead time is 2 to 5 business days after you approve the quote. Rush service as fast as 24–48 hours is available for an extra fee. Quotes themselves come back within a few hours on business days — never more than 24 hours. Worldwide shipping adds 3–7 days door-to-door.
Both print with UV-cured resin. SLA uses a laser that traces each layer point by point. DLP uses a digital screen that projects an entire layer at once. For small, detailed parts or batches, DLP is usually faster and sharper. For very large or very tall parts, SLA can be the better pick. Send us your file and we will tell you which makes sense — no charge.
We offer a full resin library: standard resin for prototypes, tough/ABS-like resin for functional parts, rigid resin for high-stiffness jobs, flexible/rubber-like resin, high-temperature resin (up to ~230 °C HDT), clear/transparent resin, castable wax for jewelry, biocompatible dental resins, and specialty resins like ESD-safe and UL94 V-0 flame-retardant.
There is no MOQ. We print one-off prototypes, small bridge runs of dozens to hundreds, and low-volume production batches up to thousands of parts — all from the same factory and process.
Yes. All customer files and designs are treated as strictly confidential. We run a secure file management system in our factory and are happy to sign an NDA before you share sensitive designs.
Absolutely — it is free with every quote. Our engineers review your part for thin walls, trapped resin pockets, support marks, tolerance risks and assembly issues, and send back clear suggestions before you pay anything. This catches problems early and saves you time and money.
Standard (supports removed, UV-cured), sanded, polished, primed, painted (Pantone matched), clear-coated, dyed, plated/metallized, pad-printed, and assembled with hardware (inserts, magnets, etc.). Tell us what you need and we will quote it.
Yes — many of our customers use DLP for short-run end-use parts, especially using engineering-grade resins (tough, rigid, high-temp, ESD). For higher volumes (10,000+), we will usually suggest a conversation about injection molding or urethane casting for lower per-part cost, and we support those too.
Yes. We ship daily to the United States, Canada, the UK, Europe, Australia and across Asia via DHL, FedEx and UPS. You get a tracking number as soon as your order ships, and typical door-to-door delivery is 3–7 business days after production.
Click "Get a Free Quote" and upload your STL, STEP or other 3D file. Tell us material, quantity, finish and deadline. Our engineering team will send you an itemized quote (with DFM feedback) within a few hours on business days.
