Overview

What Is Plastic Injection Molding?

In simple terms: we melt plastic pellets, inject the molten plastic into a metal mold under high pressure, let it cool and harden, then eject a finished part. Repeat thousands or millions of times, and every part comes out nearly identical.

It is the most cost-effective way to make consistent plastic parts at scale. A single mold can produce tens of thousands to millions of parts before it needs maintenance. The per-part cost drops dramatically as volume goes up, which is why injection molding is used for everything from medical devices to consumer electronics housings.

At YiguProto, our injection molding service covers the full journey — from rapid tooling for early design validation, through bridge production, to full-scale mass manufacturing. Whether you need 50 test parts or 500,000 production units, our China factory has the equipment, materials, and experience to deliver.

Key benefits of injection molding:

  • Extremely repeatable — part-to-part variation is minimal
  • Low per-part cost at medium to high volumes
  • Wide choice of engineering-grade and commodity plastics
  • Little or no post-processing needed
  • Can produce complex geometries with inserts, threads, and undercuts

When to Choose Injection Molding

Good fit if you need:

  • ✓ 100+ identical plastic parts
  • ✓ Production-grade material properties
  • ✓ Tight tolerances on critical features
  • ✓ Complex shapes that 3D printing cannot handle
  • ✓ Surface finish options (textured, glossy, matte)

Consider CNC or 3D printing if:

  • ✗ You need fewer than 50 parts
  • ✗ You are still iterating the design weekly
  • ✗ You need parts in less than 5 days

Design Tips

Simple Design Rules That Save You Money

Good design for manufacturing (DFM) cuts cost, reduces defects, and speeds up delivery. Here are the basics.

Design FeatureRecommendationWhy It Matters
Wall thicknessKeep walls even; 1.5–3.0 mm is ideal for most materialsUneven walls cause sink marks, warpage, and voids
Draft angles1°–2° minimum on all vertical walls; 3°–5° for textured surfacesParts eject cleanly without scuffing or sticking
Corner radiiUse inside radii of at least 0.5 mm; avoid sharp cornersSharp corners create stress concentrations and weaken parts
RibsRib thickness = 40–60% of wall thickness; add draft to ribsThick ribs cause sink marks on the opposite surface
BossesBoss wall thickness ≤ 60% of main wall; attach to ribs or wallsIsolated thick bosses sink and create voids
UndercutsAvoid when possible; use side actions or pass-through cores if neededUndercuts require complex tooling and add cost
Gate locationPlace gates on non-cosmetic surfaces; consider flow lengthGates leave a vestige; poor gate location causes weld lines
Ejector pinsPlan for ejector pin marks on non-visible surfacesEjector pins push the part out and leave small circular marks

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Injection Molding

Answers to the questions buyers ask us most often.

Upload your 3D CAD files (STEP, STP, IGES, or X_T format) and tell us your material, quantity, and finish needs. Most quotes come back within a few hours on business days, and never more than 24 hours. Every quote includes free DFM (design for manufacturing) feedback.
We prefer STEP (.stp, .step) or IGES (.igs, .iges) files because they give clean geometry and accurate dimensions. We can also work with SolidWorks (.sldprt), Inventor (.ipt), Creo/ProE (.prt), Parasolid (.x_t), and STL files. If you only have 2D drawings (PDF or DWG), send those too — they are helpful for tolerances and notes.
For rapid aluminum tooling, T1 (first article) samples are ready in 10–15 business days. For production steel tooling, T1 takes 15–25 business days depending on complexity and number of cavities. After you approve T1 samples, production runs typically take 5–10 business days. We will give you a specific timeline with your quote.
There is no strict MOQ. We support prototype runs as low as 50 pieces for rapid tooling projects. For production tooling, typical starting quantities are 500–1,000 pieces, but we are flexible. Keep in mind that the mold is a one-time cost, so the per-part price drops significantly at higher volumes.
You own the mold 100%. The tooling price you pay covers the full cost of building the mold. We store and maintain it for free at our factory for as long as you run production with us. If you ever need to move production elsewhere, we will ship the mold to you.
Yes. For low volumes (50–5,000 parts), we use aluminum molds that cut fast and cost less. For medium to high volumes (1,000–500,000+ parts), we build hardened steel molds that last for hundreds of thousands of shots. Many customers start with aluminum tooling for validation, then switch to steel for production.
Our standard tolerance is ±0.05 mm (±0.002 in) on most features, following general plastic molding standards (similar to DIN 16901 or ISO 2768 medium). For critical dimensions, we can hold tolerances down to ±0.02 mm (±0.0008 in). If you have specific tolerance requirements, note them on your drawing and we will confirm feasibility during DFM review.
Mold cost depends on part size, complexity, number of cavities, material of the mold (aluminum vs. steel), and surface finish. Simple, small aluminum molds for prototype parts often start around $1,000–$3,000. Production steel molds for complex parts can range from $5,000 to $50,000+. The best way to get an accurate price is to send us your CAD file for a free quote.
Yes. All customer files, designs, and project details are treated as strictly confidential. We are happy to sign your NDA before you share any sensitive information. Our staff follow internal data security protocols, and we never share or display customer parts without permission.
Yes, every quote comes with a free DFM review. Our engineers check your part for common molding issues: wall thickness uniformity, draft angles, undercuts, gate location, sink marks, weld lines, and ejector pin placement. If we see anything that could cause problems, we will tell you before you pay for tooling.
Yes. We can match Pantone, RAL, or custom color standards. For production runs, we can use pre-colored resin or add masterbatch colorant to natural pellets. Color sample chips can be provided for approval before full production. Note that custom color matching typically adds a small setup fee and slightly longer lead time.
We ship worldwide. For small batches and samples, we use DHL, FedEx, or UPS express (typically 3–7 days door to door). For large production orders, we offer air freight (5–10 days) and sea freight (25–40 days) at lower cost. We can also ship to your freight forwarder in China if you have one.
