The basics

What Is Thermoplastic Molding?

Thermoplastic molding is simple. Plastic pellets are heated until they melt, pushed into a steel mold, and cooled back into a solid shape.

Think of an ice cube. Melt it, freeze it, melt it again. The plastic can be reshaped and reused. That is what makes thermoplastics recyclable.

It is also the fastest way to make large numbers of identical plastic parts. Once the mold is built, every part takes seconds.

How a thermoplastic molding cycle works, step by step.

Recyclable

Runners and scrap can be reground and used again. Less waste and a lower material bill.

Tough and light

A high strength-to-weight ratio. Good for handheld devices, moving parts and portable gear.

Fast cycles

Parts drop out in seconds, not minutes. That is why molding gets cheaper as volume grows.

Great surface finish

Smooth, textured or glossy, straight out of the mold. Often no extra finishing step is needed.

Cost control

Four Design Choices That Cut Your Part Cost

Most of your part cost is decided before the first shot. Our engineers check all four for free.

Keep walls even

Thick and thin walls in one part cause sink marks and longer cycles. Even walls fix both.

Add draft angles

One or two degrees helps the part release cleanly and stops drag marks on the sides.

Avoid undercuts

Every undercut needs a side action. Remove one and the mold gets simpler and cheaper.

Pick the right resin

Paying for PEEK when PP will do is wasted money. We match the resin to the job.
